French

Why is French important in our school?
Embracing the importance of a global perspective, Saint Joseph’s recognises the significance of introducing French as a language of study. French, being a widely spoken language and a key player in international diplomacy, not only enriches cultural awareness but also provides our students with a valuable skill set for future endeavours. France is our nearest neighbour and it is likely that children will go on to learn French in high school. Introducing the language in primary school gives the children an opportunity to encounter language features that they will encounter in secondary school and helps give them an extra dimension when learning about the grammar of our own language.

What are the aims of teaching French?
Our primary goal is to instil a love for language learning and foster an appreciation for diverse cultures. By teaching French, we aim to develop linguistic proficiency, communication skills, and intercultural competence among our students. Furthermore, we seek to cultivate a curiosity about the wider world, promoting an open-minded and inclusive mindset.

How French is taught in our school?
The teaching of French at Saint Joseph’s is designed to be interactive, engaging, and age-appropriate. Utilising a communicative approach, our curriculum integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Lessons are infused with interesting and exciting resources, games, and real-life scenarios to create an immersive and enjoyable learning experience.

How do we ensure quality teaching and learning?
Quality teaching is at the forefront of our commitment. Our French language educators are experienced, and passionate about fostering a positive learning environment. The curriculum has been designed to build upon prior learning and to introduce children to common themes earlier in their school life, gradually building to more complex concepts.

What will children get from the teaching of French?
Through the teaching of French, children at Saint Joseph’s will develop a strong foundation in language skills, cultural understanding, and global awareness. They will gain confidence in expressing themselves in French, laying the groundwork for potential future language exploration. Moreover, our students will be equipped with a broader perspective, enabling them to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
